Yitzhak Shamir, the hawkish Israeli leader who balked at the idea of trading occupied land for peace with the Palestinians, died on Saturday after a long illness, ending a life spent as a soldier, spy and statesman fighting for a “Greater Israel” in all of historic Palestine.
