      Dr. TARIQ ABDELHALEEMI

It has been the attitude of some Muslim Canadian youth to talk about ISIS – to leave the country and join the ISIS forces in Syria or other parts of the world.  This is their main goal, because they perceive ISIS as the “Islamic State” which offers them a way to fight for Islam.

I appreciate the enthusiasm that comes with youth. At that age group the enthusiasm and excitement for violant ideas causes blood to run in the veins.  The adrenalin pushes every time with every propaganda the youth watch for ISIS and its victory.

However, joining ISIS was and still is not the way to serve Islam.

Simply because ISIS is not an “Islamic State”. Not by the measures of Sunnah rules.

ISIS came to power because their ‘victories’ were not due to their courage as much as the surrounding environment and weakness of their enemies.  These ‘victories’ are not the measure with which Muslims should view ISIS.

It is the twisted creed that ISIS believes in that prevents them from being an “Islamic State”. The creed of this sect has always irritated the Muslim world since the assassination Ali Ibn Ani Taleb, Peace be upon his soul, on the hands of the first Khawarij assassin, Abdul-rahman Ibn Muljim. ISIS are merely the decadences of that group. In our recent history, this sect had evolved twice. Once in Egypt, during the seventies, by Mustafa Shoukry. The second time was in Algeria, by Al-Zawabri. Both were crushed and vanished.

The main creed of this sect is the belief that whoever does not join their group and give the allegiance to their Imam, the so-called Khalifa Albagdadi, is a kafir (non-believer). Following from this is the belief that they must fight and kill those who do not join. Their main animosity is against the Sunni Muslims because they oppose them. They have killed so far, much more Muslims that any other religion believers. ISIS is the enemy of Islam.

In the authentic Hadith of the Prophet PBUH a man called Horkous Ibn Zuhair said to him “Be fair, as you haven’t been fair”, and the companions asked the Prophet permission to kill him.  The Prophet replied, “Let him go. The off spring of this man will be so religious, have prayers that far exceed yours, fasting that far exceed yours, and will read Quran. However, it would not go beyond their throats (in understanding it). They will go out of Islam like an arrow going out of the body of the hunt, without even having any trace of its blood”. Narrated by al-Boukhari

This Hadith (saying) of the Prophet PBUH set the precedent and understanding of the nature of this astray sect. At the time of Ali Ibn Abi Taleb, after he defeated Al-Khawarij, they found the body of Horkous Ibn Zuhair amongst the dead.

There was a time when the Khawarij established states in the Eastern Islamic empire of Andalos, which were attacked by the Shi’at Fatimyeen. The Sunnis helped in fighting against theses attackers. But, as they believe Sunnis are Kuffar (non-believers), they withdrew from the battle and left them to die at the hands of the Shi’at Fatimyeen!

ISIS cannot be trusted. ISIS cannot be followed. It is just a charade that suits the opportunistic approach by the old Iraq Bathies and the ambition of Albagdadi and his crew.

It has to be understood, from a scholarly point of view, that it is not the aim of our shariat (Islamic laws) to just establish a state. It has to be a state based on the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet PBUH.

Muslims might fight amongst themselves. It happened even in the time of the companions. But it is the Sunnah of the Prophet PBUH not to make Takfeer (call others disbelievers) to those who fight amongst each other. If two groups of Muslims fight, one of them has to be the “aggressor”. If that aggressor makes Takfeer, accuses the other group of being disbelievers, without reason verified by scholars, then those aggressors are the Khawarij.

We should not be swayed by minor victories and some propaganda and media movies by ISIS. We have to examine the creed they follow.

I have always been of the opinion that our enemy is back in our countries- the corrupt rulers and kings. Our goal is to get rid of such governments.

The West doesn’t want to acknowledge the fact that it is working as a catalyst for the oppression of hundreds of millions of Muslim people. As long as they lack understanding of how bad their policies toward the Middle East are, youth will find ISIS as the only viable option.

It is important, for the safety of our community in Canada, to reverse the bad decisions, made by the former leader Stephen Harper, one of the most notorious dictators in the history of the Western democratic civilization. An example is his stand against Hijab and Niqab, and the problems Muslim women have in the Malls, Government facilities and Airports. Some Provincial decision such as teaching of Sex introduced by the ministry of education. It is acceptable within the local Christian community. And it is of no consequence on the Muslim community, if it is not obligatory. But, to dictate such classes on Muslim kids, will make parents paranoid, and further encourage the kids to withdrew from the society.

There has to be a compromise. The West has to agree to establish a Sunni Islamic state, as an alternative to ISIS, but not another puppet state as being suggested by Geneva convention! A state that Muslim youth believe as respectful and capable. A state that can appreciate and understand the Islamic terms of peace and can live with the “others” on common ground. This is the only way to go forward.

Joining ISIS is not only a wrong doing, but it is a sin, in the Islamic Sunni view. It is even worse for girls and women to do so. It is forbidden for a female to leave her home and defy her parents or abandon her husband under false pretenses and propaganda. The ISIS propaganda led some youths to believe that their parents are kuffar (non-believers), and hence, it is perfectly fine to defy them. This is exactly the twisted creed of Al-Khawarij.

It is reported in the authentic Hadith that “whoever woman that gets married without the consent of her Wali’e (sponsor; such as father or brother) her marriage contract is null, her marriage contract is null, her marriegae contract is null, repeated three times” narrated by Al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Ahamd and authenticated by Al-Albani. Similar hadith are found in Al-Boukhari as well. ISIS gets around such authentic Hadith by saying that all sponsors who did not join them are Kuffar, so the girls and women don’t necessarily need their consent! That is totally wrong and against Sunnah. The consent of the sponsor is dictated to keep women safe and ensure the right choice for them. Their sponsors can’t force them to marry a specific person, but they also can’t get married without the sponsor’s consent

It is rather dangerous to travel to such places of turmoil and chaos for men, let alone for women, on their own. Horrible reports have come out from the areas occupied by ISIS of such women who deeply regretted their hasty decision to flee their homes and join a dream husband for Jihad. It turned for the most part to be a marry-divorce cycle maybe three time a year. Many have failed to escape and even got killed in the process.

So, don’t be the next victim.

Muslims should work toward establishing their own central state, where Shariat rules the society. But this has to be done by using the right means, which is toppling the corrupt rulers and kings in the Muslim countries, not by joining another corrupt sect that is as bad, or worse.
